Typical values for the PSNR in lossy image compression are between 30 and 50 dB where higher is better.
The compression ratio for a given image is measured as the ratio of the number of bytes in the image to the number of bytes in the compressed image. As expected, as the ratio increases, the quality of the image decreases.
Because JPEG 2000 employs region of interest (ROI) encoding, the selected region of an image to be compressed is of higher quality while maintaining the same compression ratio than a standard JPEG image.
