The GS1 Databar barcode is a family of numeric and alphanumeric barcodes with varying numbers of characters and a checksum. The GS1 Databar family consists of both 1D and 2D barcodes. GS1 is intended as an update to the EAN/UPC encoding formats.
The following example barcode encodes the information 0109501101530003
as an GS1 Databar barcode:
The GS1 Databar barcode family consists of seven symbols. This family can be split into two groups: those for POS (Point of Sale) use (Omnidirectional, Stacked Omnidirectional, Expanded, and Expanded Stacked), and those not for POS use (Stacked, Truncated, Limited). GS1 Databar barcodes employ a checksum as an error detection mechanism. 1, 2
Information for the POS symbols can be seen in the table below:
POS GS1 Databar Barcodes | Image | Capacity | Direction |
---|---|---|---|
Omnidirectional | 14 Numeric | Omnidirectional | |
Stacked Omnidirectional | 14 Numeric | Omnidirectional | |
Expanded | Maximum 74 Numeric / 41 Alphabetic | Omnidirectional | |
Expanded Stacked | Maximum 74 Numeric / 41 Alphabetic | Omnidirectional |
The GS1 Databar is managed by the GS1 (Global Standards One). 1
The GS1 Databar family includes GS1 Databar Omnidirectional, GS1 Databar Stacked Omnidirectional, GS1 Databar Expanded, GS1 Databar Expanded Stacked, GS1 Databar Stacked, GS1 Databar Truncated, and GS1 Databar Limited. The GS1 Databar Barcode family is governed by ISO/IEC 24724:2011. 1
GS1 Databar also has composite variants which Barcode Xpress does not support.
GS1 Databar barcodes fall into the GS1 system specification, relating them to various other barcodes including EAN-8, EAN-13, UPC-A, and UPC-E.
