    The Royal Post 4-State barcode is a fixed-length, alphanumeric 1D barcode with a checksum for error detection. This barcode symbology was developed for use by Britain's Royal Post to increase efficiency in mail routing and delivery.

    The following example barcode encodes the information 123456789 as a Royal Post 4-State barcode:

    Details

    A Royal Post 4-State barcode uses 4 bars to encode each character, 2 that extend upwards and 2 that extend downwards, except the start and stop bars. Royal Post 4-State allocates a single character for checksums, which is also 4 bars.
